With all of the different light bulb options out on the market, it can be hard to know which is the right bulb to buy. But with the standard, incandescent light bulb on the way out, and more energy-efficient options coming in, choosing the right light bulb may be easier than you think. Here at Beach Electric, we recommend switching over to LED bulbs as soon as possible.

Incandescent light bulbs are the same invention that Thomas Edison made back in 1879; LED bulbs, or light-emitting diodes, use the same light technology that TVs or cell phones use to emit light. While the way they emit light may be vastly different, LED bulbs look and give off the same light that incandescent light bulbs do. Even so, there are many other benefits of LED light bulbs over regular light bulbs. Here are some of the biggest differences and advantages of using an LED light bulb:

Life Span.
LED bulbs can last about 25,000 hours whereas incandescent bulbs only last about 1,000 hours. That’s about 1 year of life for incandescents, and 25 years for an LED bulb. While CFL light bulbs, or compact fluorescent lamps, another option on the market, can last about 8,000 hours or 8 years, both bulbs pale in comparison to the life span of an LED bulb.

Cost.
Though the cost of an LED bulb is more expensive upfront than an incandescent bulb, a difference of about $10-20 for an LED bulb versus 70 cents for an incandescent, because of the much longer life span of an LED bulb, you end up saving more long term. That means that over the course of 20 years, buying incandescent bulbs would cost you roughly $211, whereas LED bulbs will only cost you $34. That’s a big difference!

Energy Efficiency.
LED light bulbs use at least 75% less energy than an incandescent light bulb. Not only is that great for your green footprint, but this can also save you roughly 25-80% on your energy costs. In a study by Lowes Home Goods, energy costs of an LED bulb were only $30 over a 22 year period, while energy costs for an incandescent bulb were $165. Though it may not seem like a huge difference over a long period of time, it is still important to note these savings.

Light Quality.
The main reason that people may tend to prefer incandescent light bulbs over LED bulbs is because they can emit a broader beam of light. LED bulbs can be associated with blue light, which can come across as harsher. However, LED technology is constantly improving and changing, and many LED light bulbs now emit a broader, warmer, and more white to yellow-toned light that is almost identical to incandescent light.
